Libellen en beekjuffers

- in de tuin van Hermine

Langs de Wonderboom en het oude muurtje met varens in de tuin van Hermine in Frankrijk stroomt water. Het zag er nu uit als een rustige beek, in de winter kan het ontaarden in een wilde stroom. Het waterniveau stijgt aanzienlijk. Een wit ding verstoorde het uitzicht, waarschijnlijk door de wind er in gewaaid. Gefascineerd als ik was door de kleuren van de libellen besloot ik Hermine’s laarzen aan te doen en ‘te water' te gaan om het ding uit het zicht te manoeuvreren en te proberen om foto’s te maken. Er waren ondiepe delen, maar hoe verder ik liep ging ik er met mijn rok omhoog houdend en wiebelend over stenen tot aan de rand van de laarzen in. Ter hoogte van de buren bleek het een wel hele grote witte ijzeren plaat te zijn. Ik kon hem omhoog en uit het zicht zetten, er was mankracht bij nodig. Allez, les voisins, nu zijn jullie aan de beurt.

Het fotograferen van de bosbeekjuffers (Calopteryx virgo) was razend moeilijk, het is net een spelletje, zowel daar als hier. Op afstand leek het of zij zwarte vleugels hebben, maar op de foto’s is goed te zien dat het blauw/turqoise is. Heel erg mooi, en heel erg spijtig dat ik nog geen betere foto’s kan maken. Het was leuk om door het water te banjeren, als kind zat ik eeuwig in en om de sloot.

Het wemelt in onze tuin van de libellen, ze vinden het heerlijk om te zonnebaden, te dansen in het licht en vliegen zelfs achter me aan mee naar binnen. De vleugels zijn zo teer en transparant. Vandaag heb ik ze ondanks de regen gezien: ze zitten in de bomen, in de heggen, in de borders, rondom de vijver.
Er zijn in Nederland 71 soorten libellen. De groene in onze tuin zijn houtpanserjuffers, maar wat is die oranje? Ik vind hem een beetje griezelig. Bijzondere insecten!

Graag laat ik jullie een van de libellen zien gemaakt door René Lalique (1860–1945). Zijn bijoux zijn een van mijn passies. Ik reis naar alle tentoonstellingen. De combinatie van verschillende materialen, stenen, halfedelstenen, de organische vormen, het vakmanschap, het is adembenemend mooi en ik bewonder zijn werk zeer. Dit corsage ornament werd gemaakt rond 1897-1898 en is te zien in het Calouste Gulbenkian museum in Lissabon. Het is gemaakt van goud, emaille, chrysopraas, maansteen en diamanten.


Next to the 'Wondertree' and the garden of my friend Hermine's house in France is a stream. It is quiet and calm now, but raises high in wintertime and becomes turbulent, taking things with it downstream. As I was fascinated by the dragon flies, dancing around her garden and the stream, I decided to put on Hermine's rubber boots, take pictures and at the same time remove something that had ended up in the water behind the neighbour's house. It was disturbing the sight, very heavy to remove and I could only put it upright. Allez, les voisins, now it is your turn to do the rest.
When flying about they looked black, but in fact are such a wonderful blue, turquoise, gold even. Taking pictures is extemely difficult, with their telescopic eyes they notice every movement and change in light. I felt like a child wading through the water, balancing on the stones underneath. It seemed shallow, but in the end the water came up to the edges of the boots and I had to keep my skirt up high.

In our own garden there are a zillion dragon flies at the moment. They sunbathed in the sun on Friday, followed me in the house, flew from the trees to the hedges, above the pond and the waterplants, but also around the various borders.
There are 71 different species in Holland, I do not know the details yet on the orange and the green ones in our garden. Their various stages in life are interesting and so fascinating to see with their thin and frail wings.

They inspired me to show you a picture of one of my great passions: jewelry of René Lalique (1860–1945). The colours, the materials used, the stones, the enamel, the craftmanship, it is breathtakingly beautiful. This corsage ornament is only small and can be seen in the Museum Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon. I travel the world all over to see Lalique's jewelry at exhibitions.

Having them so plentiful in our own garden is a gift and a delight.
