Aunt Molly - what's in a name?

What's in a name, zei Shakespeare.

Free as a bumble bee - Abba Lyrics

I’m down and I feel depressed
Sitting here just waiting
For next bus travelling
Downtown
It’s a crying shame
Isn’t it
The beautiful weather
If I could have my way
Well, I would not be working
On a day like this I know what I’d like to be
As free as a bumble bee
Take a sip from
Every flower
Free as a bumble bee
While away each lazy hour
What a good life
Lying laid back
Like an old railroad bum by the track
What a good life
Living outdoors
Lie in the grass and chew on a straw

This cutting travelled all the way from France in a plastic mineral bottle. It is a nice memory of our visit to the house and garden of Lilian and her husband, but also her creativity. Its beautiful apricot colour is enchanting. As the top leaves have not unfolded yet it looks just like a Volendam costume hat.
Hardly ever I call my plants by its original or Latin name, it is always: Plant from my mother, plant from my sister, plant from my friend, etc. So there is a story and a memory behind every plant.
Lilian did the wall painting and no doubt she painted the cache pot as well. As my plant will grow bigger I shall try to get a matching pot, and who knows, maybe it is inspiring to paint one myself?
A lot was going on this morning, the blackbirds eat all the berries from the trees, a crow looked vicious on top of my grey faded sun embrella and a dove came roaring straight from heaven like the Holy Spirit. It was a surprise to see that the buds of the Busy Lizzy had opened, as for weeks I had been eagerly following the process.
One would wish to always have his camera at hand to take pictures, because there are such beautiful and wonderful moments to share with others.
The dragon flies still dance plentiful in the garden. I am so impressed that they live from a couple of months to two years in the water itself before they start flying.

Libellen en beekjuffers

- in de tuin van Hermine
- in onze tuin

Next to the 'Wondertree' and the garden of my friend Hermine's house in France is a stream. It is quiet and calm now, but raises high in wintertime and becomes turbulent, taking things with it downstream. As I was fascinated by the dragon flies, dancing around her garden and the stream, I decided to put on Hermine's rubber boots, take pictures and at the same time remove something that had ended up in the water behind the neighbour's house. It was disturbing the sight, very heavy to remove and I could only put it upright. Allez, les voisins, now it is your turn to do the rest.
When flying about they looked black, but in fact are such a wonderful blue, turquoise, gold even. Taking pictures is extemely difficult, with their telescopic eyes they notice every movement and change in light. I felt like a child wading through the water, balancing on the stones underneath. It seemed shallow, but in the end the water came up to the edges of the boots and I had to keep my skirt up high.

In our own garden there are a zillion dragon flies at the moment. They sunbathed in the sun on Friday, followed me in the house, flew from the trees to the hedges, above the pond and the waterplants, but also around the various borders.
There are 71 different species in Holland, I do not know the details yet on the orange and the green ones in our garden. Their various stages in life are interesting and so fascinating to see with their thin and frail wings.

They inspired me to show you a picture of one of my great passions: jewelry of René Lalique (1860–1945). The colours, the materials used, the stones, the enamel, the craftmanship, it is breathtakingly beautiful. This corsage ornament is only small and can be seen in the Museum Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon. I travel the world all over to see Lalique's jewelry at exhibitions.

Having them so plentiful in our own garden is a gift and a delight.
Beautiful pictures on dragon flies which appear in Holland are to be seen on this website: http://www.naturepix.nl/libellen
If you click on the subjects on the left bar of the website the various species will appear, categorized by names, etc. Alas, it is in double Dutch, but the pictures are selfexplanatory.

Beatrix, Société Céramique

The four entries for Teacup Tuesday so far have not quite met the conditions of this gathering: showing off one's wonderful antique teacups. Although I still have a few antiques to share, it is the spirit of the moment that makes me wanting to show what is an activity on my side and that is this 72 year old teacup plate.

*BLUE*, flowers and nature are an eternal source of inspiration, which can be seen on many a tea and dinner service.

In the last posts on my blog I showed the wonders of Dutch water land close to my home, today something that is very dear to me appears on my blue scene. It is a chipped teacup saucer of a tea and dinner service that was designed in 1938 on the occasion of the birth of our present Queen Beatrix.
Beatrix, Société Céramique, with a stray flower design, in blue, red, black and black with a gold rim,was mass produced earthenware and a best seller. Today the interest on the antique market has diminished somewhat. There are quite a few pieces for sale on the internet at reasonable prices, but the teacups are rarely on offer. When I come across it in antique shops I exclaim ‘How truly cute and lovely this is’. Apart from the blue flower design I appreciate the model just as much.

As to the designers of the Société Céramique very little is known, Royal Sphinx have let me know. So who the designer was of Beatrix remains a question mark. If there is anyone who knows the answer, please let me know.
Of at least one artist is known that he traded his talents as a decor designer and a model maker to keep up a family, but he is not related to Beatrix.

The Société Céramique(1863-1958) started in Maastricht and at that time produced every day use earthenware. It originated from Clermont en Chainaye, which in 1859 was taken over by Guillaume Lambert. He continued the business as Société pour la fabrication des faiences en produits céramiques de toute espèce sous la raison sociale Guillaume Lambert & Cie; shortened in 1863 as Société Céramique. In 1958 it merged with Royal Sphinx. The Société Céramique was a booming business and highly competitive with what happened in England and France.

I love dinner services; there is nothing more inviting than a beautifully decorated table. Sometimes just the last left over piece of such a service is a *TREASURE*. This plate is a true treasure to me, as it is a link to days gone by within my family (it belonged to one of my grandmothers), a link to a well used dinner service, but also reflects Dutch history, Delft blue (which this is not) and Dutch national costumes. Polka dots and flowers are often used in the material designs of those. Its royal blue colour is very attractive.

The Beatrix plate arrives on our breakfast table everyday, together with other magnificent pieces of craftmanship. It is a bright and cheerful start of the day to use it. Wild flowers from our garden combined with the final stage of a huge bunch of purple gladiolas put in a Delft blue jug accompanied it all on last Sunday morning. I hope you will enjoy my ‘Dutch Blues’ and I will certainly enjoy your posts on Teacup Tuesday! And who knows, maybe you will find a Beatrix somewhere out there when you go hunting on an antique spree?! At least you know the history behind the design.

Queen Beatrix, visiting te village of Vries.
She is an intelligent, hardworking and very creative Queen - she makes beautiful sculptures. On this occasion she wears a blue floral dress.

Les nuages merveilleux

Towards the West

Towards the Northeast

Towards the East, where the thunderstorm is heading.

To the South it is grey.

19:44 hrs
I am sitting in the dining room, reading blogs and comments on my computer, while our dinner is cooking. The sun shines on our elm trees, but I nearly lift of from my chair - lightning, and an instant roll of terrific thunder. Wodan is throwing his daggers from the sky.

I was brought up with a true horror of thunderstorms: Pull out the plugs of the electricity equipments, close the curtains, close the windows, but alas - I have not adapted these fears. On the contrary, I walk to the window, I walk to the door and walk outside, because *HOW ON EARTH* could there be such a strike of lightning and thunder all at once, while the sun is shining at the same time at my trees? Is there a rainbow to be seen?
You see? I have an inquisitive mind.

The leaves that I find at my feet have been put together by nature, by the wind, not by me. The yellow leaves dropping since June .... draught, but also the process going on - I dread the upcoming End of August, summer and its light should last forever, be eternal.

21:06 hrs
The sunset reflects on the pine tree in the South, Wodan has disappeared with his anger.

Wolken, wind en water - Blue, bluer, bluest

Clouds, wind and water.

If you look good you can see geese flying in V-shape. They so enjoy the surroundings they even stay in winter these days, becoming a problem. But it could be other birds already migrating to the South. A lot of birds reside in the Waddenzee in the North of Holland.

'Snoekkruid', Pontederia (thank you, Fleur, for letting me know the name of this plant. It is the only bunch I have seen in the entire area and so striking to see.

The captain and the boat in blue.

Delft blue serviettes. The cooker is black, and the tilapia we grilled were pink, so they do not fit into this post ;-)) (but tasted great).

Well, that was our blue Friday that ended pink in the evening (see previous post).
